The imposing structure of Belfast Castle towers over the city below. Situated on Cave Hill, the castle is closely linked with the history of Belfast City. Replacing the original built by the Normans in the 12th century, the present castle was completed in 1870 and is a fine example of Scottish baronial architecture. The castle and gardens were donated to the City of Belfast in 1934 by the Shaftesbury family and were used for many years to host wedding receptions and dances. Following an extensive refurbishment during the 1980s, the castle has been returned to its former glory and is a showpiece for Belfast City.
There are beautiful gardens and an adjoining country park as well as a restaurant and antique shop for the visitor to enjoy. Function rooms are available for hire. Don't miss the splendid views of Belfast Lough and sight of the city below you. The castle is overlooked by "MacArt's Fort", a rock where the United Irishmen planned the rebellion of 1795.
