Shannon Airport was Ireland's first transatlantic International Airport
Located on the west coast of Ireland , Shannon Airport is one of Ireland's main international Airports and is a gateway for flights to Ireland from the U.S. and several European destinations. The airport takes its name from the River Shannon which is close by. The nearest cities are Limerick 15 miles to the south and Ennis 15 miles to the north.
Shannon Airport is an ideal arrival airport for those wanting to tour the west coast during their Ireland vacation. The airport has 5 long-term car parks with over 3,500 spaces, while all the major car rental companies have desks in the main arrivals hall. Drivers with disabilities can use the short term car park for long term stays as it is much closer to teh main terminal building.
In the departure area you'll find a range of shops, bars and restaurants and Shannon is one of the few International airports of its size to provide FREE WiFi internet access throughout the terminal.
From July 2009, full USA Border control clearance is available from Shannon Airport meaning that if you are making a connection in the USA you can check your bags right through to your ultimate destination and not have to clear customs at your entry airport in the USA. YOu effectively arrive in the USA as a domestic arrival. Aer Lingus have chosen not to avail of this service however, so you still arrive in the USA asan international arrival and must clear customs on arrival if travelling on Aer Lingus.
