Clad in ivy and set within private gardens in the centre of the town, the Old Ground is an attractive and distinctive sight in Ennis. This old manor house, dating from the 18th Century, was once the home of the leading landowners around Ennis; the Mahon family. When one of its new owners John Mahon, returned from London to take over the family home he was greeted with the words, "You are welcome to the Old Ground Sir". This name and the welcoming sense of hospitality have been part of the Old Ground ever since.
Inside, the Old Ground is set with attractive homely lounge areas warmed by glowing open fireplaces. Each of the guest rooms are wonderfully appointed and stylishly designed, with a mix of restful colours, traditional pine furnishings, and homely comforts together with all the usual facilities.
The Old Ground has two excellent restaurants; the O'Brien Room in the heart of the hotel, a traditional homely setting for traditional favourites and home cooked dishes and the fabulous Town Hall Restaurant, one of the finest in Ennis, a modern chic affair serving contemporary European cuisine.
The Old Ground also boasts one of Ennis ' most renowned pubs, Poets Corner. Something of an institution in the town, this wonderfully characterful bar is traditionally set and boasts some of the best traditional music and craic, that Ennis has to offer.
County Clare is renowned for its musical heritage and wonderfully atmospheric landscapes around the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. And Ennis and the Old Ground Hotel is an excellent base from which to explore this part of Ireland.
