Development of Ireland West Airport Knock
One reason for the airport's very existence is because on the 21st of August 1879, The Virgin Mary, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of Knock Parish Church. From this miraculous occurrence, Knock has grown to the status of an internationally recognised Pilgrimage site & Marian Shrine. Pope John Paul 2nd visited Knock for the centenary of the apparitions and in the 1980's Mgr James Horan lobbied successfully to have an Airport built nearby.
